Every facet of your business is regulated by local, state and federal governments. As the owner of an electrical contracting business, you do not have the time to constantly monitor the bills that are introduced by legislators in the General Assembly or U. S. Congress that will affect your business.
Our Government Affairs Committee along with our lobbyist, RJ Hicks and Associates, monitors legislation as it moves through the General Assembly in Denver. Legislative alerts and updates are sent out to notify members of pending committee hearings and floor votes. IEC’s Call to Action notification provides specific details on a bill and legislators’ contact information to alert chapter members to contact their legislators to express their position on the bill.
A chapter contractor member and a staff member also sit on the IEC National Government Affairs Committee to work with other contractors and IEC staff from around the country to monitor legislation in the U. S. Congress.
During the annual IEC Legislative Conference, chapter members and staff travel to Washington, DC to meet with the Representatives and Senators from Colorado to discuss important issues that affect Colorado electrical contractors.
IEC encourages members to participate in the election process as well. IEC members are involved in their local precincts and attend their respective party conventions at the local and state level.

Recently passed by a vote of 241 to 185 in the U.S. House of Representatives. H.R. 800 would strip American workers of their right to a federally-supervised, private ballot election when deciding whether to join a union, leaving employees far more vulnerable to coercion and intimidation during union organizing drives. The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
What You Can Do
1. Contact your state or federally elected representative, have your Zip+4 ready and click here.
2. Join your fellow contractors in Washington for Capitol Hill meetings with your elected officials during the 2007 IEC National Legislative Conference, April 24-26. This is a great opportunity to let your lawmakers know that the Employee Free Choice Act would replace the traditional, private ballot National Labor Relations Board supervised election process with a system called "card-check," leaving employees vulnerable to threats and intimidation from union bosses, management or both..
